Woody PhD work awarded by Ecological Society

PhD student Claire Kenefick has won an award from the Ecological Society of Australia (ESA) for a poster on her research into alternative, recycled mineral mulches for Woody Meadows. Claire recently attended the ESA conference in Darwin and received the AFF Student Prize for Outstanding Poster Presentation on the Biology or Cultivation of an Australian Plant. Mineral substrates have a dual role in Woody Meadows – acting both as a planting media and as a mulch to help suppress weeds and conserve water. Mined products such as scoria are naturally low in nutrients and weed seeds, making them ideal for native landscapes. Claire’s work into recycled alternatives such as concrete will help improve the sustainability of Woody Meadows and other urban plantings.
