Transforming low maintenance landscapes across Melbourne

As one of the initial partners in the Woody Meadow research pilot project, the City of Melbourne has seen firsthand the benefits and potential uses that these plantings offer across their municipality. The City of Melbourne is sharing these learnings in their Woody Meadow Pilot Project: Guidelines to Create Diverse Landscapes.

The City of Melbourne joined the Woody Meadow Pilot Project at a time in which they were re-evaluating how to deliver high quality public landscapes to provide:

  • enhanced community engagement with plants and public landscapes
  • plantings which are resilient to climate change
  • increased plant cover to reduce the Urban Heat Island Effect and stormwater runoff
  • biodiversity habitat.

The pilot project was a collaboration between the University of Melbourne, the University of Sheffield and the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria. The two project plots are located in Birrarung Marr and Royal Park. The guidelines are intended for use by land managers everywhere.
