Woody meadows and railways

LXRP guidelines show how woody meadows can bring foliage and colour to rail corridors

Woody meadows are proving to be a versatile approach to urban greening that can be adapted to a wide array of sites, including railway corridors. The Victorian Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) is removing level crossings across Melbourne and has collaborated with University of Melbourne researchers to identify the suitability of woody meadows for a range of conditions around newly built railway infrastructure. The resulting LXRP guidelines provide guidance for integrating attractive, robust and low maintenance woody meadow plantings across the LXRP network. Based on a research report by Dr Claire Farrell and Assoc. Prof. John Rayner, the guidelines include design development, specifications for site preparation and installation, and maintenance.

See the LXRP guidelines here.
